Skillbridge

Project Overview

SKILLBRIDGE is a European initiative designed to modernise how skills are identified, taught, and applied across higher education, vocational training, and industry. It brings together universities, VET providers, innovation hubs, and enterprises to close the gap between education and real-world workforce needs.

At its core, the project combines artificial intelligence, strategic foresight, and industry collaboration to identify emerging skills and translate them into updated curricula, practical learning experiences, and policy-relevant insights. By doing so, SKILLBRIDGE helps ensure that learners, educators, and organisations are equipped to navigate rapid technological change and the transition to more sustainable economic models.

The challenge addressed by SKILLBRIDGE: Labour markets are being reshaped by artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, digital transformation, sustainability transitions and new patterns of innovation and entrepreneurship. Education and training systems, constrained by fragmented intelligence, slow adaptation cycles and disconnected governance are struggling to keep pace. As a result, a capability gap is emerging at the intersection of deep technology, sustainability and foresight, one that calls for stronger collaboration between education and industry.

The mission: To strengthen the capacity of Higher Education, Vocational Education and Training, industry actors and innovation ecosystems to anticipate and respond to rapid technological, economic and societal transformation, through integrated capability intelligence, curriculum modernisation, mobility, training and collaborative ecosystem development.

What makes SKILLBRIDGE different is that it does not treat future skills as a list to be inserted into existing programmes. It advances a capability-oriented systems approach in which skills, competences, behaviours, institutional conditions and ecosystem relationships are organised into adaptive capability architectures. The future, as the project puts it, is built through systems of capability, not lists of skills.

Strategic objectives

  • Develop AI-driven and foresight-informed capability intelligence systems to identify emerging transformation dynamics and future capability needs
  • Modernise 40+ HEI and VET programmes through capability-oriented curricula, interdisciplinary learning and industry-informed educational innovation
  • Strengthen mobility, knowledge exchange and experimentation across universities, VET providers, enterprises and innovation ecosystems
  • Equip educators and trainers through adaptive Train-the-Trainer and professional development approaches
  • Build long-term collaboration through the CFI Alliance, the Skills4Innovation Alliance and sustainability-oriented governance structures
  • Support transferability and scalability through digital infrastructures, immersive communication and ecosystem engagement

SKILLBRIDGE: Shaping the Future of Deep Tech Work and Skills through Alliances for Education and Enterprises is a 36-month initiative co-funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ Programme (grant agreement No. 101247086) under the Alliances for Innovation framework.
